When planning and designing a fence for your residential or commercial property, there are many materials to choose from. There are metals, plastics, and a variety of woods that can be used.
Steel and aluminum metals require painting and can succumb to corrosion and rust. You could opt for stainless steel that requires less maintenance. However, it is an expensive material. Plastics, such as PVC, don’t need painting. However, these materials are not as structurally sound as wood or metal. And, plastic fences can discolor and attract mold growth.
Wood, especially cedar, is an excellent choice for a fence. In fact, we feel it is the best type of wood for fence construction.
Benefits of Cedar Wood for Fences
At Nortex Fence and Patio we feel strongly about the positive properties and characteristics of wood for fences. The best wood for fence components is cedar, in our experience. There are 2 types of cedar: white cedar and western red cedar. White cedar’s growth range is limited and is therefore not as readily available as western red cedar. Red cedar thrives along most of the west coast of North America, making it more available.
Cedar trees commonly grow in damp, wooded environments, making the wood extremely moisture and rot resistant. Cedar wood is also known for its exceptional ability to repel insects. In addition to being less susceptible to decay, cedar is strong, aromatic, and attractive. This makes for the best type of wood for fence elements.
Cedar wood also does not expand or contract in temperature extremes. It won’t swell when exposed to moisture or humidity. And, it doesn’t warp as other types of lumber are prone to do. Cedar may be the best type of wood for fence materials due to its inherent stability.
Wood, in general, is extremely customizable for fences and gates. This versatile material is not limited to stock components. It can be modified onsite to fit your particular property conditions, such as changes in grade.
Options
Cedar can be left to weather naturally. It will turn form white or red to gray over time. It can also be primed and painted or stained. Cedar is available either clear or knotty. Both are structurally viable and durable. Clear is a fabulous choice for a natural or stained finish. Knotty might be a better and more affordable option if the intention is to prime and paint it.
If you decide to allow your cedar fence to weather naturally or to stain it, it is often recommended that raw cedar be finished with a coat or two of sealer. A sealer can significantly enhance the natural beauty of the wood. It also can extend the wood’s lifespan. Sealers are available in either oil or water based formulations. Since cedar can last up to 40 years, periodic resealing is generally a good practice.
